30.5 - EVERLOST

"Everlost" by Neal Shusterman describes the adventures of Allie and Nick, the main characters in a world between heaven and hell. When Allie and Nick die in a disastrous car accident, they get lost on their way to heaven and stuck in a world called Everlost. Here they meet Leif an annoying twelve-year-old boy and learn about the McGill, a terrifying monster that has been terroroizing the children of Everlost. They find that Everlost is quite different to the real world, like the fact that if you stand in one place too long you start to sink to the middle of the earth, or that things from the real world pass through you and you can only touch objects that have passed into Everlost. Allie and Nick soon decide to go home and see if their parents survived the car crash. On their way they encounter the kingdom of Mary Hightower, a leader of some of the Afterlights, people that got stuck in Everlost. They stay for a few days and Nick quite likes it there. Allie on the other hand feels like she needs to move on, she decides to try to escape everlost and along with Nick and Leif goes to visit the Haunter, a nine-year-old boy who has the ability to communicate with the real world. Allie, however, underestimates the Haunter's powers and her friends get trapped and captured by the McGill. She then has to go on a dangerous journey to save Nick and Leif and hopefully find a way to get out of Everlost.

10.5.- INCARCERON

I have read this book a while ago, and can’t believe I forgot to write about it on my blog! “Incarceron” by Catherine Fisher is a fantasy science-fiction with a strange haunting feature. The story is set in the future where people are forced to live the same way as in the past: with no electrical appliances. Hidden in a cube bead is a prison called Incarceron. Incarceron is no ordinary prison: It is ‘alive’ and has a mind of its own. People inside it often don’t remember how they got there or why they are here: some were born in the prison and some were brought there with memories of the outside world erased from their minds. They live a tough life in separate ‘tribes’ in different wings of the prison. Inside this prison lives a boy named Finn. Like most people, he doesn’t remember why he is here, but believes that he came from the outside. Soon he discovers a special device: a key which lets him communicate with the outside world and meets Claudia, the daughter of the prison’s warden. Claudia is trying to escape from a planned marriage with the son of the ruler of the country. She makes a deal with Finn: She will help him escape from Incarceron and in return, he will save her from the planned marriage. An action-filled book full of unsolved mysteries and that ominous feeling that follows the reader throughout the whole story.

18.4.- CATCHING FIRE, MOCKINGJAY AND HUNGER GAMES (THE MOVIE)

I have finished reading the last two books of the Hunger Games series and must say that they were both every bit as good as the first book. The story ends with Katniss leading a revolution against the Capitol and then returning to district 12. After finishing the last book of the series (Mockingjay), I was itching to go see the movie. I was counting down the days till it would finally come out and later was extremely dissapointed to find out that Hunger Games will not be coming to the cinemas in Vietnam. Luckily I will soon be returning to my home country and hopefully be able to see the movie. I have heard mixed oppinions on how it turned out: some people say that the book was much better others think that the movie was great. I guess i will have to find out for myself…

10.3.- HUNGER GAMES

I have just recently checked my e-mail and was surprised at the number of comments on my old grade 5 blog. I have decided to start writing on here again.
I have finished reading “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins a few days ago. I loved this book! Although it was a bit violent, the plot was so exciting that I stayed glued to the book and couldn´t stop reading. “Hunger Games” is set in the future where in the country of Panem lives sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen with her sister and mother. The state is divided into twelve districts which are ruled by the Capitol (The thirteenth district). The people in the twelve districts have to work hard to make products for the Capitol. Katniss lives in district twelve where they produce coal. The Hunger Games is an event held each year in the Capitol. Each district has to provide two teenage children: a boy and a girl which are then sent to the Capitol where they fight to the death with other teenagers. The boy or girl that is left is provided food and resources by the Capitol for his district for the whole year. This is done to show the other districts who is incharge and keep the Capitol at rule. This year when Katniss´s sister, Prim is picked to take part in the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to go instead and saves her sister. She then has to fight hard to survive and save her family which wouldn´t survive without her.

3.10.- LEVIATHAN

My friends b- day party was awesome! We made our own food and had a food tasting competition (You can probably guess what the theme was). Now I am reading a book my mom borrowed from a friend. It’s called Leviathan. The book is partly a fantasy and its very exciting. First it tells the stories of Alek and Deryn (the main characters) separately, and in the middle they meet. I’m at that part now- Alek just saved Deryn from freezing to death under the broken Leviathan. Incase you’re wondering what a Leviathan is, it’s like an air baloon except is alive. What I find really wierd is how the culture of Alek and Deryn differs. Alek’s culture uses a lot of machines and new inventions. Deryn’s culture clones animals and uses them for stuff like flying… wierd. The author describes that the Leviatan is a huge whale with motors attached to it which people use for flying. It has animals that have been trained to protect it and feed it such as bats that throw up metal thorns and birds with acid covered webs to destroy enemy airplanes. Leviathan is a very interesting book.

28.9. – PERCY JACKSON SERIES

Well… I just started middle school and everything is different. I started to learn how to play the violin, met some new friends, started a website with my best friend, moved to a new house and… I won’t mention the list of the thousand other things that are new this year. At least books stay the same all the time. Recently I was introduced to an awesome new series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I immediately started to like it. I borrowed the books from my friends, and reccomended the series to everybody. I like it for the same reason as most of the previous books listed: exciting and funny. This morning my friend informed me that somebody from the MS student council asked me and her to write the page for movies and books in the school magazine. Definitely doing Percy Jackson. Better start writing reviews…
